It is often said that a business plan is a ‘roadmap’ for the business. Well, a simple business plan or presentation plan is a kind of roadmap - maybe at 1:100,000 scale, and mostly for the purpose of saying “we are going to start in Melbourne and travel to Brisbane, and we are travelling via the Pacific Highway”.
A strategic business plan is a roadmap with a lot more detail. It is a map with an itinerary. The roads you intend to travel are all coloured in, AND you have made notes why you want to travel them. You have written in the margin of the guide book to say which museums you are going to visit and what activities you are intending to participate in on each day of your journey. And even more - you have left a space to check off each goal as you achieve it. But its not really for anyone else’s benefit - it is just for your benefit, and for those travelling with you, to make sure you dont forget to visit that really cool winery near Newcastle!
In the same way as a map with an itinerary, with goals and notes, a strategic business plan is a document that records the goals you set, as you plan the road your business will travel over the next 3-5 years.
