An investor will rarely invest in a business when the entrepreneur lacks the discipline to write a business plan - if they do not have enough discipline to undertake a comprehensive planning process, evidenced by a written plan, they will almost certainly lack the discipline required to run a business profitably.
So what sort of things should be in a business plan that will be used to attract capital from outside sources? Mission statement, goals, objectives, budgets, financial forecasts, target markets, and business strategies are a start. Other things that should be included are the physical location of the business, industry research, market research and results, and a detailed resume of each member of the management team.
In addition, an attractive graphical presentation of the highlights of the business opportunity and concept is invaluable when pitching to investors. It should make judicious use of graphs and tables, and be a concise summary of your verbal presentation.
The page ‘How to write a comprehensive business plan to obtain funding’ details an expanded description of what to include in a business plan being written to obtain financial backing.
